Applied Measurement Uncertainty for Calibration and Testing Laboratories

Training Formats

This course is available in two formats: Training for individuals and private group training.

Course Overview

Designed for professionals in testing and calibration laboratories, it provides a comprehensive understanding of measurement uncertainty in line with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements. Participants will explore core concepts such as error, accuracy, precision, repeatability, reproducibility, and metrological traceability, while also working with key frameworks like the GUM (JCGM 100) and VIM (JCGM 200). Through a structured approach and hands-on exercises, attendees will learn to build and interpret uncertainty budgets, apply statistical tools, and evaluate contributing factors, gaining practical skills to apply internationally recognized methodologies with confidence.

Prerequisites

Participants should:

  1. Have attended A2LA WorkPlace Training’s “Introduction to Measurement Uncertainty” course, or have working metrology-field knowledge of mathematics and statistics
  2. Be proficient in spreadsheet use
  3. Be working in the calibration or metrology field

Equipment Needed

The participant will need to bring a laptop computer (PC or Mac) with Microsoft Excel or a similar spreadsheet program installed.

Target Attendees

Calibration or Testing Laboratory Managers, Engineers, Scientists, or Technicians.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the key concepts in the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty of Measurement (GUM)
  • Identify and define contributors to calibration and testing laboratory measurement uncertainty budgets
  • Determine how to evaluate and include contributors in an uncertainty budget
  • Build a basic measurement uncertainty budget for calibration and testing activities
  • Apply practical skills to report uncertainties for calibration and testing laboratories in alignment with accreditation requirements
  • Improve measurement reliability and support traceability across commercial, OEM, and national metrology contexts

CEUs Awarded

1.4 CEUs Awarded*

*A2LA WorkPlace Training is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is authorized to issue the IACET CEU.

Presentation Style

Lecture, discussion, and group exercises.

Hands-on exercises using Microsoft Excel provide a practical approach that enables the participant to apply the methods in their particular calibration or testing application during and after the workshop.  Several Excel templates and tools are provided for the participant to implement.
